Here at BOW, we sometimes like to write about what we're up to. This Blog page is our chance to report from the front line of wine making and we hope you like our silly little thoughts!
Sharon and I love the Grinch!
"You're a vile one, Mr. Grinch / You have termites in your smile / You have all the tender sweetness of a seasick crocodile / Mr. Gri-inch / Given the choice between the two of you, I'd take the uh... seasick crocodile. "
"You're a monster, Mr. Grinch / Your heart's an empty hole / Your brain is full of spiders, you have garlic in your soul / Mr. Grinch / I wouldn't touch you with a thirty-nine-and-a-half foot pole."
"You nauseate me, Mr. Grinch / With a nauseous super-naus / You're a crooked, jerky jockey and you drive a crooked hoss / Mr. Gri-inch! Your soul is an appalling dump-heap, overflowing with the most disgraceful assortment of rubbish imaginable, mangled up in tangled up knots!"
"You're a rotter, Mr. Grinch / You're the king of sinful sots / Your heart's a dead tomato splotched with moldy purple spots / Mr. Gri-inch! / You're a three-decker sauerkraut and toadstool sandwich with arsenic sauce!"
"You're a mean one, Mr. Grinch. You really are an eel. You're as cuddly as a cactus, you're as charming as an eel, Mr Gri-inch. You're a bad banana with a... greasy black peel"
It's been a tough year of clawing out of one hell of a hole. And for some of us the crocodile got a bite, the spiders moved in, the knots became tangled; we slipped on the greasy black peel. For some jobs were lost and some of our loved ones passed. We have friends who have struggled to save their homes. Businesses have disappeared and some of the tough times continue.
But I think that it is fair to say that we don't look into the abyss now as we did a year ago. We don't see the storm clouds of a depression gathering. Folks mostly breathe a bit easier. A year ago no price was to dear to pay to save the national economy. And it is a common understanding among nearly all (except perhaps the jerky jockey who drives a crooked hoss) that we now need to plan to begin to rein in our accumulated and excessive behavior -and debt. I'd like to suggest that this new found awareness is actually quite a blessing. Perhaps even now it is leading to changes for the better as in all quarters, doing the safe thing of not doing anything is no longer an option.
Now is a time that we rejoice at the Roeder home and there is so much for which we are thankful. There are so many wonderful people who have come into our lives this past year. While we have lost some loved ones, at times struggled to pay the bills and to meet our many business commitments, and occasionally found it hard to get out of bed, life has not been at all Gri-inch-y. It has overall been grand and amazing. It has been fun. And it has been so fulfilling!
I look around and I do not see a Grinch. Not now. Not in this time of thanks and rejoice. So I can hum and sing the Grinch song with the same child-like joy and mirth as I always have. I can hold sweet Justice's large and loving face in my hands and hum it to him and he contentedly listens. "Blah blah bla blah, Mr. Grinch / Blah blah blablah blah blah blah...
Blah blah Justice, blah blah! Justice's tail wags and he smiles. Good dog Justice, Good Dog!
Sharon smiles and makes the day's supper and Barley and little Peanut rest contentedly dreaming of snacks and running through the snow.
This is our gift to you our friends. It is our Christmas Day wishes. It is our small piece of this season spent together and as family. It is the sphere of joy that we hope is carrying us all together to a better day. It is the gathering of spirit among those with faith in each other and in the transcendence of love, family, and dear friends. It is this day.
"He puzzled and puzzled till his puzzler was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before! Maybe Christmas, he thought, doesn't come from a store. Maybe Christmas... perhaps... means a little bit more! And what happened then? Well, in Whoville they say that the Grinch's small heart grew three sizes that day. And then - the true meaning of Christmas came through, and the Grinch found the strength of *ten* Grinches, plus two! Welcome, Christmas, bring your cheer. Cheer to all Whos far and near. Christmas Day is in our grasp so long as we have hands to clasp. Christmas Day will always be just as long as we have we. Welcome Christmas while we stand, heart to heart and hand in hand."
Welcome Christmas! Welcome Cheer! Welcome our families from far and near. / We all come of faiths diverse and many / what we share at this time is hearts of plenty. / Christmas, Hannukah, Kwaanza and more, all from that place of joy we adore / Hearts full of love and the Spirit of peace / we with family and friends share the prayer...that strife and want soon shall cease.
