A Vacation Story

Posted on: 7th August, 2009

We took a vacation this morning. Well actually, I did. Sharon went to the gym.

Awoke to one of those rare and precious country August morns almost cool and absent the terrible humidity. The bedroom window was open and the sheets were cool with just a touch of breeze gently caressing. The air was deeply and enjoyably breathable. My vacation was...just...letting...myself...lay...there.

It has been a very enjoyable 18 hours. Although we host friends at the winery all weekend long, we rarely entertain at the house any more. So we had supper on the patio last nite with 13 friends and family. My dad is in town and we invited several of his friends who had flown in to catch up, as well as old Jersey friends of Sharon's, along with our friends and partners Jack and Barbara. It was a big smash up of differing and separate relationships wonderfully colliding. Interesting dialogues and new friendships were taken up and a lovely time was had by all. Of course there was a very liberal selection of wine from all over the world (yes, one of the benefits), and we ended with the scintillating Chocolate Lab for dessert. the sunset was magnificent with a rose pink accentuated by wispy clouds over the Piedmont ridgeline. Soon the season's last of the fleeting lightning bugs danced before us while high above a few stars began to shine. As you know, it was the full moon and we watched the bright silver light of its rising move upwards toward us across the vineyard; the dark shading of the forest at our backs nearest us and shrinking away to the ethereal light beyond as the moon's rising slowly crested the trees. By eleven pm its orbit had cleared the house roof and candles were extinguished and our speaking was stilled. The few of us that remained sat there quietly taking in the awesome night view. It was so bright and so very beautiful.

Lying in bed I still remembered the clear night even as I entered the new day. Rising to find the lovely Sharon gone to her morning appointment with the gym, I wandered onto the patio and sat quietly with dad, happily sipping our coffees. It felt like a May day. That was four hours ago, and it still feels and smells like a May Day now: clean, crisp, clear, and cherished in the dog days of August.

Of course this weekend we have lots of fun at the winery. Of course this weekend we have lots of great wine. We have educational private tours of the production area and we have walks in the vineyard where the grapes are swelling and acquiring lovely color and delightful nascent sweetness. We have those beautiful and historic sunsets and we have all the work getting ready for the crush; just a few weeks away. If you want to learn more about the weekend, you can click on our photo below to link to our website and calendar of activities.

Maybe you can join us. It's pretty nice at BOW.
