A Beautiful Barrel Oak Winery Weekend!

Posted on: 3rd April, 2009

It's a mighty beautiful day out my open office winedow. Woke up to rain but now the cloud deck is at 1000 feet and moving fast to the North, breaking up and bringing Spring temperatures up from Tennessee and the Carolinas. There is the lightest fresh breeze entering and the outdoors permeates my space, dragging my senses pleasurably outside. The trees are budding red and green but are still mostly naked. The tightly rolled balls of nascent leaves provide color but do not yet fill in the spaces between branches.

Because of the clearing skies the sun extracts the color of the forests, travelling from one hilltop to the next to be followed by cloudy shade. The differences are stark: bright then dark then bright, brighter....darkbrightdarkbright. Woops a shower! Now just that fast sunny and drying again with the clouds over 3000 feet. Here in the country...it...happens...that....fast. They say it'll be in the mid to upper 60s later today and through the weekend. So we've got the firepits ready on the patio.

We are so excited about the next seven weeks! Leading up to our one year anniversary, they are absolutely packed with fun and excitement! Hmmm....lets see...benefits for Cystic Fibrosis, the March of Dimes, AmCan Society, all with great bands. Porsche and Dodge/Jeep clubs. Westies, Yorkies, and King Cavalier Spaniels. Green Drinks on Earth Day. Musicians most Friday and Sundays. Arts and Wine Festivals and "Grapes for Apes" at the National Zoo. A Habitat for Humanity Fundraiser and the Warrenton Arts and Wines Festival. DeeJay nite with Soundlynx (BIG FUN!) Ballroom Dancing, and the triumphant return of TGISunsets! All of this is wrapped in the warming days and nites and yes, we are pleasantly exhaused just thinking about it. That's why they call it living the dream!

To pull this off we're hiring right and left and also activating our volunteer base. You ever dream of working in a winery? We're also trying to find a few more business partners to help us pay for all of the expansion. You ever dream of owning a winery? We're building two more tasting bars and another sales station and we're landscaping everywhere!

Then there's the planting at the end of the month: 3800 vines. Chardonnay and Viognier. Up top around the winery. Deer fencing is already going up. We'll start laying out rows next week. My favorite part is putting the seedlings in the ground. That's really what this is all about: Growing stuff! Living stuff! Circle of life!

I'm especially proud of my wife this week. Sharon turned a lovely 38 yesterday (she still gets ID'd) and who won a bronze medal at the women's international wine competition for her birthday! I'll betcha $100 none of the other women competitors were in their first year making wine. Ba-da-Bing! The competition came from all over the world's great wine growing regions. California. Argentina. France, Italy, and Australia. Wow. BOW WOW!

Hope we see you here soon. It's a great time to be at BOW!
